George Johnson
Principal information
George Johnson is what is considered to the a "track caller." Alan Lomax explains:
"It takes constant maintenance work by the sectio gangs stationed all along a railroad to keep the rails in line and the roadbed solid. The track caller is often paid a bit more than regular gang members, because his sun recitative starts, stops, and coordinates their efforts as well as sets the pace of all the tasks the gang carries out. he acts, in effect, like a musical assistant foreman, who, while he coordinates the work with his chants, keeps everybody in a good humor with his banter." (Land Where the Blues Began, Chapter 4, p. 172).
