Filmmakers

Glenn Hinson is a folklorist and scholar of African American expressive culture whose work has focused on blues and gospel music, religious traditions, oral poetry, and vernacular arts in the American South. A longtime professor of folklore and anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he has also directed numerous public folklore projects and worked closely with traditional artists and communities across North Carolina. Hinson is the author of Fire in My Bones: Transcendence and the Holy Spirit in African American Gospel and, with William Ferris, co-editor of The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture: Folklife. He co-produced with Susan Massengale the 1989 documentary Step It Up and Go: Blues in the Carolinas, which documents the rich Piedmont blues traditions of North and South Carolina.
