Richard Kane is an independent documentary filmmaker, editor, and cinematographer whose work explores American art and culture. He began his career in public television in Indiana, where he directed Tough, Pretty or Smart: A Portrait of the Patoka Valley Boys (1981), which won Best Short Documentary at the Cork International Film Festival and was shortlisted for an Academy Award. Kane later founded Kane-Lewis Productions and created numerous documentaries, including the New England Emmy-nominated Maine Masters series of portraits of distinguished artists. His productions have appeared on public television, National Geographic, and the Discovery Channel
