Filmmakers

Susan Massengale is a North Carolina filmmaker, television producer, and communications professional whose documentary work has explored the state’s music and cultural history. She co-produced with folklorist Glenn Hinson Step It Up and Go: Blues in the Carolinas (1989), a UNC-TV documentary tracing blues traditions in North and South Carolina through performances and interviews with musicians including Etta Baker, John Dee Holeman, Algie Mae Hinton, and Moses Rascoe. Massengale also co-directed with Alex Albright Boogie in Black and White (1988), about the rediscovery of the 1947 African American musical film Pitch a Boogie Woogie. She subsequently worked in television at UNC-TV and later as a public information officer for the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
