lizabeth “Betsy” Peterson is an American folklorist who served as director of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress from 2012 until her retirement in 2022. She received her Ph.D. in folklore from Indiana University and has worked extensively in public folklore, including positions with Texas Folklife Resources, the New England Foundation for the Arts, and the Fund for Folk Culture. While a graduate student at Indiana University, Peterson worked with folklorist Elaine Lawless on the fieldwork and production of the 1981 documentary Joy Unspeakable, an examination of Pentecostal worship in southern Indiana.
