Reconstructing Mishkan (2026)

About the Film

"Reconstructing Mishkan" documents the story of Mishkan Shalom, a progressive Reconstructionist synagogue in Philadelphia founded in 1988. The film follows Rabbi Shawn Zevit as he leads this diverse congregation, which includes interfaith families, LGBTQ members, and activists united by a commitment to Jewish values and political action.

This one-hour ethnographic documentary explores how to maintain a relevant approach to Judaism amid changing beliefs and turbulent politics. It captures moments of connection, humor, and questioning, showcasing the joys and challenges of sustaining such a community.

Produced and narrated by filmmaker Barry Dornfeld in collaboration with Rabbi Zevit, the film is intended for a broad audience, including faith communities, Jewish viewers, activists, and those interested in Philadelphia's culture. It aims to strengthen connections within progressive Jewish communities and with other faith-based groups.
