About the Film

Weaving Bitter with the Sweet follows Lao refugee and master weaver Mone Saenphimmachak as she confronts memories of war, displacement, and survivor’s guilt. By renewing the weaving traditions of her homeland, Mone finds a way to preserve Lao culture while expressing both the sorrow of the past and the possibilities of a new life in America. The film also features her husband, loom maker Vanxay Saenphimmachak; together, they received an NEA National Heritage Fellowship in 1993.
