Living Sanctuaries: The Monasteries of Zanskar (2026)

About the Film

High in the Western Himalaya, Zanskar’s Buddhist monasteries and nunneries preserve centuries of craftsmanship in earth, stone, murals, and carved woodwork.

Living Sanctuaries follows Studio Nyandak, an architecture and engineering firm based in New York City and Dharamshala, as its team documents these sacred buildings alongside local communities and scholars. Through architectural surveys, oral histories, and local voices, the film explores the challenges of preserving a living heritage threatened by earthquakes, climate change, and shifting demographics.

Produced and directed by Drung, a nonprofit film collective based in Dharamsala, with support from Folkstreams and the National Endowment for the Arts.
