Handmade: White Oak Basketry in Cannon County, TN (2011)

About the Film

Handmade is narrative of the history of the white oak basketry tradition in Cannon County, Tennessee, one of the oldest and most respected Anglo American basketry traditions in the United States. Two interwoven narratives examine the development of the craft tradition in Middle Tennessee and the intensive processes involved in making a white oak basket-from the selection and harvesting of premium "basket timber," to the creation of raw basket materials, to the painstaking hand-creation of individual baskets. Featuring interviews with Tennessee state folklorist Robert Cogswell, and footage of Mary Jane Prater, award-winning white oak basket maker. Written and produced by Evan Hatch.
