I've Endured: Ola Belle Reed (2025)

About the Film

I've Endured: The Music and Legacy of Ola Belle Reed tells the story of Appalachian musician, singer, and songwriter Ola Belle Reed and examines her life, music, and influence on traditional mountain music. Raised in western North Carolina and later living in Maryland, Reed drew on her experiences in rural communities, writing songs that reflected everyday life, work, family, and the challenges of the region. During the folk revival of the 1960s, her music reached new audiences while remaining rooted in older Appalachian traditions.

The film traces Reed's career through archival photographs, recordings, restored film footage, and interviews with family members, fellow musicians, and others who knew or worked with her. Produced over four years, it documents both her personal history and her role in the development of bluegrass, old-time, and folk music. In 1986, Reed received the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship, and in 2019 her 1973 album Ola Belle Reed was added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress. Together, these materials provide a record of her life, her music, and her continuing influence on American traditional music.
