With These Hands (2009)

About the Film

In March 2007, after 83 years of operation, the Hooker Furniture Company closed its plant in Martinsville, Virginia, unable to compete with lower-cost overseas production. With These Hands enters the factory during its final weeks, following ten longtime employees as they demonstrate their specialized skills and reflect on the pride, fellowship, and dignity they found in their work.

Through interviews with workers and company leaders, filmmaker Matthew Barr documents the human cost of globalization and preserves the memory of an American manufacturing tradition at the moment of its disappearance.
